Notes From The Artist

Winslow Homer is a favorite artist of mine. The original of this painting is at the Arkell Museum in upstate New York. This charming fall scene shows a group of lads gathering pumpkins and possibly husking corn. Look at the boys seated among the corn stacks.

Homer painted it in watercolor with some intentional "scratching" of the paint, and some gouache strokes to create the dried corn stalks.

I learned so much about Homer by re-creating this painting. Fall is a favorite season of mine and I love painting pumpkins. So I emphasized mine a bit more than Homer did in his original version.

I've included a screen grab of Winslow Homer's original painting at the Arkell Museum so you can see the similarities.

More About
Jane M. Mason

As a small child, I started taking art classes at Joslyn Museum in Omaha. Every Saturday morning I was at the museum for a class. As a five-year-old, I won my first art contest and distinctly remember the drawing I had created being used on the cover of the spring catalog for Joslyn Museum. My childlike enthusiasm for art and happiness creating art is in my DNA now. It’s part of every piece of art I create.
